BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- A late Leandro Fernandez strike gave Velez Sarsfield a 1-0 victory at Rosario on Sunday as Gabriel Heinze's team moved within two points of leaders Boca Juniors in the Argentine Superliga.
Fernandez broke the deadlock with a rasping 81st-minute strike from outside the box after smart work from Lautaro Gianetti.
Velez have now won six of their past seven league matches and are fourth in the 24-team Superliga standings with six wins, one draw and three losses. Just three points separate Boca Juniors and seventh-placed Newell's Old Boys.
"I'm privileged to have this group of players," said former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Heinze, who has been Velez's head coach since December 2017.
"We fought to strengthen our squad at the start of the season and I value the new players that have come in."
Earlier on Sunday, Diego Maradona's Gimnasia y Esgrima suffered a 1-0 home loss to Union. Gimnasia remain second-last in the table, having drawn one and lost four matches since 1986 World Cup winner Maradona was appointed manager in September.
"Our finishing let us down and they scored from their only opportunity," 58-year-old Maradona said. "We can't afford to give teams that luxury."
In other fixtures on Sunday, Huracan won 2-0 at home to San Lorenzo and hosts Aldosivi beat Defensa y Justicia 1-0.
