TRIPOLI, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Forces of Libya's UN-backed government on Thursday announced the killing of 16 soldiers of the east-based army in southern Tripoli.
"Our brave forces continue to control Al-Yarmouk camp (southern Tripoli), after luring militias of the war criminal Haftar (eastern-based army), killing 16 of their troops and taking over three of their armored vehicles," the UN-backed government forces said in a statement.
On the other hand, the east-based army said their airstrikes destroyed "ammunition stores and gatherings of mercenaries" in southern Tripoli.
The east-based army has been leading a military campaign since early April in and around the capital Tripoli against the UN-backed government, attempting to take over the country's largest city and overthrowing the UN-backed government.
The east-based army, led by General Khalifa Haftar, is allied with the east-based government, as the North African country is politically divided between eastern and western governments.
Libya has been troubled by conflicts and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
