BUCHAREST, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's influence on the global stage is growing, and its contributions to world peace and development are remarkable, Nicolae Ecobescu, Romania's former deputy foreign minister and former ambassador to the United Nations, said on Wednesday.
He made the remarks when Jiang Yu, Chinese ambassador to Romania, visited him on the occasion of United Nations Day.
As then deputy foreign minister and deputy head of Romanian delegation to the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ecobescu reminisced of the time when Romania supported the resumption of China's legal seat in the United Nations.
It was a great victory for the friendship and solidarity of the two peoples and world justice, he said.
Praising China for its active participation in international affairs, Ecobescu said that over the years, he has been paying close attention to China's performance in the United Nations and other international organizations.
"The influence of China on the international arena is increasing day by day and its contribution to world peace and development has attracted worldwide attention," he said.
The Chinese ambassador said that 48 years ago, the 26th UN General Assembly passed Resolution 2758 on the restoration of the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations.
As a co-sponsor, Romania upheld international fairness and justice and played a historic and important role in restoring China's legitimate seat in the United Nations, he said, noting that the Chinese government and people have always kept that in mind and will never forget old friends like Ecobescu, who contributed to that great moment.
Jiang also said that over the years, China has actively participated in the political, economic and social affairs of the United Nations, being the second largest contributor to the UN regular and peacekeeping budgets, as well as the largest contributor of peacekeeping personnel among the permanent members of the UN Security Council.
China has always supported the United Nations as an active player in international affairs while safeguarding its authority and status, said Jiang.
In the face of new challenges, China will continue to uphold multilateralism, international law, and firmly safeguard the international system with the United Nations as its core, she said.
