NAIROBI, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) director for African Department, Abebe Selassie, on Monday commended President Uhuru Kenyatta for spearheading the war against corruption, saying Kenya is on the right path.
Abebe, who held talks with Kenyatta in Nairobi, said the IMF is satisfied with the stable economic growth that averages between 5.5 percent and 6 percent as a result of the ongoing fiscal reforms that the Kenyan government is implementing to ensure macroeconomic stability.
"Because of this, Kenya is a leading light in terms of economic reforms and growth in the region," he said, according to a statement issued by the presidency after the meeting.
Abebe, who was in Kenya to the launch of the IMF's Regional Economic Outlook report for Sub Saharan Africa, discussed the relationship between Kenya and the Bretton Woods institution where they agreed on the need for closer cooperation.
Kenyatta has stepped up the war against corruption, which had dogged his administration in his first term, with billions of U.S. dollars of public funds ending up in peoples' pockets.
Kenyans in the last few months have witnessed the arrest and prosecution of several high-profile individuals over theft of public funds.
The suspects include wealthy businesspersons, senior government officials and politicians, all who have been arraigned in court over graft.
Kenyatta also thanked the IMF for the technical support it gives Kenya, saying the institution plays a key role in the stability of the country's economy. Enditem
