GAZA, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The UN envoy to the Middle East said on Monday that the United Nations will play an important role in guaranteeing the success of the Palestinian elections.
The remarks were made by Nickolay Mladenov on Monday afternoon during his meeting with the Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh and other senior Hamas officials in Gaza City, according to a Hamas press statement.
"It is necessary to achieve a national consensus in all the upcoming steps in order to make sure that elections would succeed and transparency is achieved," Mladenov was quoted by a Hamas statement as saying.
The preparations for holding the elections "would lead to a fair roadmap that ends the internal division which has been going on since 2007," he added.
According to the statement, Mladenov and Haniyeh agreed to work together to make the elections successful and end the internal Palestinian division.
