RAMALLAH, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday handed a memo on elections to the head of the Central Elections Commission, a senior Fatah party member said.
The memo will be delivered to the political factions in the Gaza Strip and should be signed ahead of the elections, Sabri Saidam told the official radio station Voice of Palestine.
Abbas' memo underlines the commitment to the 2007 election law and holding elections in East Jerusalem, said Saidam.
The memo has been sent to all factions in the West Bank as well, he added.
Hanna Nasser, the elections commission chief, arrived in Gaza on Tuesday morning for the third visit within 10 days in preparation for holding general elections in the Palestinian territories.
According to Saidam, the Palestinian factions involved in the elections should declare their commitments to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and honor PLO's obligations.
The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that Abbas has agreed that presidential elections will be held a few months after parliamentary elections.
Last parliamentary elections were held in the Palestinian territories in 2006, where Hamas, ruler of Gaza, won a majority while Abbas was elected the Palestinian president in 2005.
Hamas and Abbas' Fatah parties have exchanged accusations of impeding the new elections, amid fears that Israel will not allow elections to be held in East Jerusalem.
