CHENGDU, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Global pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca will set up its western China headquarters in Chengdu, capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan, according to a memorandum on strategic cooperation signed Tuesday.

The Chengdu headquarters will be one of four regional headquarters for AstraZeneca in the country.

It is expected to take control of AstraZeneca's operations in China's western regions and build a business innovation center, an industrial incubator and other projects.

More innovative drugs will be imported and sold across China via Chengdu, a national base for R&D of biomedicine with competitive talent and clinical resources. The city had introduced a total of 296 Fortune 500 companies by the end of September.

With approximately 13,200 employees throughout the country, AstraZeneca China achieved sales of nearly 3.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2018.
