GABORONE, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Botswana is working towards revising its current legislative framework governing road transport to decisively deal with road carnage, the southern African country's transport minister said on Sunday.
Thulaganyo Segokgo, Botswana's minister of transport and communications, made this revelation at the 2019 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) in Francistown, some 430km northeast of Botswana's capital city, Gaborone.
With respect to issues of non-compliance and lawlessness on Botswana's roads, Segokgo said the government will tighten the laws in an effort to combat the scourge of road carnage.
Segokgo said targeted programs and information geared towards raising the level of public awareness on the importance of safer vehicles complemented by stringent law enforcement campaigns shall be intensified.
A total of 462 lives were lost through road carnage in 2018, as compared to 444 in 2017, according to Botswana police statistics.
As at Nov. 14, 2019, Botswana has lost 389 lives attributable to human error due to misconduct by drivers, police reported.
The WDR is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year.
