QINGDAO, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Miao Ruilin, former vice governor of east China's Jiangsu Province, was sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison Tuesday for taking bribes worth over 7.2 million yuan (1.03 million U.S. dollars).
Miao was also fined 700,000 yuan and his illegal gains will be turned in to the national treasury, according to a statement by the Intermediate People's Court of Qingdao City, Shandong Province.
The court found that Miao took advantage of his posts in Jiangsu between 2005 and 2016 to assist organizations and individuals in project approval, project contracting and job adjustment, among others.
In return, Miao illegally accepted directly or through his wife money and gifts worth over 7.2 million yuan during the period.
Miao was given a lenient punishment as he confessed, provided additional information about his crimes and showed repentance, and all of his illegal gains have been recovered, according to the statement.
Miao said he accepted the verdict and would not appeal.
