ABUJA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's road safety police on Tuesday confirmed at least eight people killed in a fatal accident in the central state of Kogi.
Seven others were injured following the accident on Monday in Felele area of Lokoja, the capital of Kogi, said Emmanuel Abe, a commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps.
Abe said the accident involved a petrol tanker, three cars, four tricycles, and two motorcycles.
According to the official, the driver of the petrol tanker had lost control due to brake failure and rammed into other vehicles, killing at least eight persons on the spot.
The road safety official said a further investigation had been launched into the incident.
Road accidents still continue to occur in Nigeria despite stringent traffic rules which were introduced by the government to help curb the road carnage.
Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
