A massive landslide occasioned by heavy rains on Friday night has claimed 37 lives in northwestern Kenyan county of West Pokot.
NAIROBI, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- A massive landslide occasioned by heavy rains on Friday night has claimed 37 lives in northwestern Kenyan county of West Pokot, local administrators have confirmed.
Apollo Okello, the county commissioner of West Pokot, said that 12 bodies including 7 children had been recovered as rescue efforts for the remaining victims of the massive landslide intensified.
Local media reported that the landslides that hit two villages in West Pokot County were triggered by hours of heavy downpour that also caused massive destruction of infrastructure including roads and bridges.
Kenya Red Cross said it had deployed personnel to assist in the rescue effort for the landslide victims in West Pokot that is located in northwestern parts of Kenya that neighbor Uganda and South Sudan.
