Greek gov't tells women "we stand by you" as domestic violence cases on rise

ATHENS, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women which was marked on Monday, Greek government sent a message of support to women suffering of domestic abuse, as the latest official statistics showed an increase in reported cases.

"Our goal is the elimination of violence against women so that we will no longer need an international day condemning it. Until then, we embrace all women victims with the words 'We stand by you'," Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in statement posted on social media.

The central government in coordination with local authorities will strengthen legal frameworks and institutions providing aid to victims, he stressed.

According to Greek police data, the number of reported cases of domestic violence increased by 34.5 percent between 2014 and 2018, and seven out of 10 victims were women.

In 2014, authorities recorded 3,512 cases, in 2015 a total of 3,572, the next year 3,838, in 2017 they stood at 3,930 and last year 4,722.

As part of efforts to raise awareness, prevent and put an end to violence against women, the Greek government launched a campaign distributing informative leaflets under the title "you have a voice, we stand by you."
