HONG KONG, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- A total of 730 sets of traffic lights in various districts of Hong Kong have been damaged since June in violent incidents, official data showed Thursday, as road facilities have become the major target of rioters.
Traffic lights were more seriously vandalized in October and November as a number of controllers were burnt and many cables have to be replaced, according to the Transport Department (TD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.
After months of repair works, most of the traffic lights have resumed normal operation, except 80 sets still under urgent repair.
The government is striving to complete the repair of about 40 percent of the traffic lights currently out of order within the next week, including those at major road junctions in Yau Tsim Mong, Sham Shui Po, and Yuen Long districts.
The TD appealed to members of the public to stop damaging traffic lights and other road facilities for the safety of road users.
