VALLETTA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Businessman Yorgen Fenech was formally charged on Saturday with complicity in the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017.

Before the Magistrates' Court, Fenech, 38, was charged with organising and financing a crime, being an accomplice in the crime and conspiring with third persons to commit a crime with the use of explosives. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Fenech sat impassively, with the hands folded and staring to the ground, as the police read out the charges in a packed courtroom. Present were Daphne's husband and other family members.

The prosecution asked for the court to issue a freezing order on all his assets, which Magistrate Audrey Demicoli upheld.

There was no request for Fenech to be released on bail and he was remanded in custody.

Caruana Galizia was murdered in a car bomb in Malta in October 2017.
