MUMBAI, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- People gathered in India's financial capital Mumbai on Sunday to express anger against the horrific burning and daylight murder of a victim of gang rape in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, as well as a gang rape in the southern state of Telangana.
Protesters demanded speedy justice and faster convictions, ensuring victims are respected and protected, fair investigations and sensitivity to victims by the police, and most above all providing safe environment for women and calling for an end to rape culture.
Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in Indian as per the last available data of the National Crime Records Bureau with 24,923 cases reported in the year 2012.
The Unnao gang rape victim was set on fire by five men on Thursday while she was on her way to Raebareli for a hearing of the rape case, while the killing of the alleged rapists in Telangana rape case by the police on Friday was akin to state-sponsored murder or mob justice, the protesters said.
Demanding accountability from India's Home Minister Amit Shah to take personal responsibility of the series of events and step down, the protesters said the alleged rapists from Unnao and the policemen involved in the Telangana encounter killings be tried in a fast track court with the proceedings televised on national TV.
