MUMBAI, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- India's Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL), a global leader in data network solutions, has signed pact with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for research in 5G communications technology, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
Under the pact, the STL, which designs and deploys high-capacity converged fibre and wireless networks, will sponsor a chair professorship, who will work towards accelerating the advancements in 5G by unifying IIT's research and domain knowledge with STL's industry expertise in end-to-end network connectivity.
The IIT is a premier academic and research institute located in Chennai of the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
Commenting on the partnership, Chief Technology Officer of Sterlite Technologies Badri Gomatam said, "We are entering the era of 5G connectivity and we need to make the most of it. Through this partnership, STL and IIT Madras (old city name of Chennai) are committed to realizing the enormous potential of 5G for customers and industry in India and global markets".
Demand for data is all set to go up and 5G technology, which is still evolving, will address this demand by enabling ubiquitous connectivity through efficient and affordable standards, said the statement from the company, which partners with global telecom companies, cloud companies, citizen networks and large enterprises to design, build and manage such cloud-native software-defined networks.
With annual revenues of 686 million U.S. dollars, Sterlite Technologies has strong global presence with next-gen optical preform, fiber and cable manufacturing facilities in India, Italy, China and Brazil, along with two software-development centers across India and one data centre design facility in Britain.
