ABUJA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- A security post stationed near former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's house in Bayelsa state was attacked by unknown gunmen on early Tuesday morning, and one soldier was killed.
In a statement released by Jonathan's media aide Ikechukwu Eze, the gunmen who came in with about five engine boats stormed the security post guarding the former president's residence in his hometown of Otuoke early on Tuesday, and attempted to take away a gunboat belonging to the post.
"They were however resisted by gallant soldiers who engaged them in a firefight," said the statement.
The gunmen who couldn't stand the firepower of the military were forced to beat a retreat. One soldier, unfortunately, lost his life in the fight while another was injured, according to the statement.
The injured soldier who is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility is in stable condition, said the statement, adding that Jonathan was not in the house at the time of the attack.
Jonah Unuakhalu, a military spokesman, who confirmed the incident to Xinhua, said the military has launched a manhunt for the attackers.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari sympathizes with Jonathan in a statement released on Tuesday following the gunmen attack.
While commending the soldiers on guard for repelling the attack and consoling family of the killed soldier, Buhari said protection of the life of the former leader and all citizens of the country would continue to be the major preoccupation of his administration.
