KABUL, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Counter-Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA) have waged an anti-drug operation and destroyed a large amount of narcotics in eastern Nangarhar province, the country's Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

"The CNPA supported by Afghan Air Force carried out an operation in Achin district, Nangarhar province, destroying over 53,000 kg hashish," the ministry said in a statement.

The destruction of the drugs was a heavy blow for insurgents and anti-government militants as they have been using profits from the illegal drugs to fund insurgency, the statement noted.

Security situation has been improving in Achin, the former stronghold of Islamic State (IS) outfit, over the past months, as security forces have conducted search and cordon operations, eliminating IS militants in the mountainous region.
