Chinese-built high-quality roads in Zambia's Chongwe district give the area an improved look and win commendation from local government officials and residents.
CHONGWE, Zambia, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- The construction of township roads in Zambia's Chongwe district in Lusaka Province by Chinese company has received accolade from local government officials.
Geoffrey Chumbwe, Chongwe municipal council Mayor, has described the road projects by the Chinese construction company AVIC International Engineering Co. as a success.
Chumbwe observed that the district which had for a long time lagged behind in road infrastructure had experienced a face-lift through the upgrading of roads from gravel to bituminous standards by the Chinese firm.
He disclosed that more than 14 kilometers of township roads were upgraded in the district in 2019.
He said this was a great achievement as some areas like Chongwe central had never had tarred roads.
According to him, the Chinese firm had exhibited good workmanship which had greatly improved the outlook of the district, adding that the firm had delivered quality roads and drainages.

He also thanked the company for sinking three boreholes in the district during the time of the completed project in the Chongwe central ward.
"We are very happy that AVIC International has completed the road projects in record-time. These roads are of the highest standard and the company has even gone further to respond to the needs of the locals. In their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), AVIC International sank and donated three boreholes in two villages of Chongwe. We are grateful that the firm has helped to increase access to clean water in the district," he said.
Chumbwe was hopeful that, this would just be the beginning of a renewed partnership between Zambia and China.
Mathews Ngosa, a civic leader in the district where the company had tarred 8.5 kilometers of roads, described the company as a committed partner in infrastructure development.

Another civic leader Juvenalis Mulimbika thanked the governments of Zambia and China for their fruitful relationship that had resulted into meaningful development in the Zambian town.
Rodgers Chileshe, a resident of Libuko village in Chongwe central ward in the same district, described the road projects as a successful venture that would go a long way in triggering economic growth in the area.
According to him, the Chinese firm had gone beyond expectation and delivered quality roads that have improved mobility and would help in minimizing tear and ware of vehicles. He commended the government for considering the rural district in the road projects that were being undertaken across the country. ■
