UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and to the governments of all the countries whose nationals lost their lives in the Ukrainian Airlines plane crash.
According to his spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief is "deeply saddened" by the crash.
A Ukrainian Airlines passenger plane, with 176 people on board, crashed Wednesday morning near Iran's Imam Khomeini International Airport shortly after taking off. All passengers and crew were killed.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko confirmed on Wednesday that most of the victims of the crash were Iranian and Canadian citizens, and that 11 Ukrainian citizens were killed in the crash.
