LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Nine people has lost their lives and 20 others sustained injuries due to heavy rains and flooding that hit parts of the southern Helmand province, provincial governor's spokesman Omar Zawak said on Tuesday.
The heavy rains and floods hit Kajaki, Gereshk, Nawa and Garmsir districts where some mud houses caved in due to continued rains over the past couple of days, killing nine people and injuring 20 others, including women and children, the official asserted.
Zawak also added that investigating teams had been sent to the affected areas to identify the affected families and provide humanitarian assistance.
Parts of Afghanistan have been the scene of snowfall and heavy rains over the past few days.
About a dozen people were killed in the western Herat and southern Kandahar provinces due to snowfall and heavy rains in the chilly winter last week.
In the war-torn and economically impoverished Afghanistan, people in rural areas mostly construct mud houses, which are vulnerable to natural disasters including heavy rains and snowfall in winter.
