BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday urged the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, according to a Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

Spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks at a news briefing when asked to comment on a U.S. warship sailing through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday.

"The Taiwan question concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and is the most important and sensitive issue in China-U.S. relations," Geng said. "We urge the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques and handle Taiwan-related issues in a prudent and appropriate manner, so as not to damage the bilateral ties and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."
