Businesses boom in Nairobi as Kenyans celebrate the Valentine's Day.
NAIROBI, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Every year around the world, the Valentine's Day is celebrated by many people taking time to show love to their special one. Even here in Nairobi, the business people took this opportunity to make most of the profits from this special day.
Not only it is a time for business to boom but it is also a day to take time to smell the roses.
Love was in the air as rose flowers and the colour red also known as the colour of passion dominated the streets of Nairobi, the Kenya capital on Friday.
It also spelt profits for the traders in the busy streets. According to reports, the sentimental spending in the east African country around Valentine's day has increased by 32 percent in the last two years.
Daniel Njenga Ndirangu, a businessman selling clothes and shoes for a living told Xinhua that on Valentine's day he changes his trade to romantic items due to the prospect of the profits.
" I do sell flowers literally all because for 12 good years I have seen the benefit of flowers, it is something profitable, I do gain a lot of profit during Valentine's Day," said Ndirangu.
Other popular items on sale were such as chocolates and wines, according to Claire Njoki who sells wine,
"Men bought more wine as valentine gifts for their loved ones compared to women," said Njoki.
Kenya is popular for its fresh flowers and especially the rose flower. According to the Kenya Flower Council, Kenya's flowers are on very high demand around valentines around the world, particularly in Europe.
John Mungai, a florist in Kenya's city market says that Kenya flowers are the best even in the region.
"I have done this business for a number of years like ten years and I can tell, I have had that experience even an opportunity to visit Holland and I have seen our flowers are being appreciated over there," said Mungai. Enditem
