PARIS, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and seven others injured in a building fire in the northeastern French city of Strasbourg on Thursday, the local fire service said in a statement.
Another 23 were unharmed and received in a gymnasium in the city. The fire has been taken under control, and its cause is still under investigation.
According to local media, firefighters responded to the incident at 1:16 a.m. local time (0016 GMT) after receiving an alert that there was smoke in the seven-storey building.
French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner and Mayor Roland Ries of Strasbourg have expressed their condolences to the victims and their families on Twitter.
