ZAGREB, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- A meteor exploded as it entered the atmosphere over Croatia on Friday morning, local media reported.
The meteor was seen flashing across the sky at 10:31 a.m. local time (0931 GMT), and shortly after a loud clap of thunder could be heard. A dashcam video clip of the flashing object and what appears to be an explosion in the blue sky has gone viral on Croatian social media.
Although it is still not officially confirmed, Korado Korlevic, a well-known astronomer, told Croatian national television HRT that it was without a doubt a meteor that exploded high in the atmosphere. An analysis should reveal why it did explode, at what altitude and what speed.
The Croatian Astronomical Union wrote on its Facebook page that the bright object must have disintegrated at an altitude of at least 30 kilometers above sea level, which made the event visible from a large geographic area. Astronomers here say that the meteor would have light up the sky identical to daylight if it appeared during the night.
