KABUL, March 5 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people including militants, security personnel and civilians have been killed over the past 24 hours in Afghanistan amid reported resumption of fighting by the Taliban fighters, officials said Thursday.

In the latest waves of violence, clashes erupted in Khawja Sabzposh district of the northern Faryab province on Thursday and lasted for a while, leaving three insurgents dead and three others wounded, army spokesman in the northern region Mohammad Hanif Rezai said.

Similarly, four police officers have been confirmed dead and two others wounded as the Taliban militants stormed a security checkpoint in Imam Sahib district of the northern Kunduz province Thursday morning, head of provincial council Mohammad Yusuf Ayubi has confirmed.

Nine militants have been reported killed in the southern Helmand and western Herat and the neighboring Badghis over the past 24 hours.

The fighting has taken place in the wake of resumption of Taliban attacks on security forces.

After inking a peace deal on Feb. 29 in Qatar capital Doha, Taliban militants had agreed with the U.S. to keep on reduction in violence in the violence-battered country.
