Cambodia reports 3,196 criminal cases last year, up 7.6 pct

PHNOM PENH, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia had seen 3,196 cases of criminal offences in 2019, up 7.6 percent from 2,969 cases in the year before, Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak said on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference in Phnom Penh, Sopheak said the last year's crimes included 701 felony cases and 2,495 misdemeanor cases, leaving 211 people dead and 829 others injured.

Felonies include murder, rape, armed robbery and acid attack, while misdemeanors are theft, fraud, and gambling among other minor infringements.

According to the spokesman, Cambodia recorded 290 rape cases last year, up 12 percent from 258 cases in a year earlier.

"Of the total crimes last year, we had cracked down on 2,842 cases equal to 89 percent and arrested 4,119 suspects," he said.

Besides, the kingdom had suppressed 163 human trafficking and sexual exploitation cases last year, arresting 219 suspects, he said, adding that 438 victims had been rescued.
