CHENGDU, April 2 (Xinhua) -- A forest fire that started on Monday has been put out in southwest China's Sichuan Province while firefighters remain on guard about reignition, local authorities said Thursday.

As of Thursday noon, open flames in the mountains in the city of Xichang had been put out after more than 3,600 firefighters battled for days. Over 3,200 firefighters are still strictly on guard.

The fire started on a local farm Monday afternoon and quickly spread to nearby mountains due to strong winds, according to the local government.

On Tuesday, 19 people, including 18 firefighters and a local forest farm worker who led the way for the firefighters, died while battling the fire.
