DAR ES SALAAM, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian police said on Monday one man is being held in Kilimanjaro region for allegedly spreading false information on the COVID-19 pandemic on social media.
This brought to three the total number of people arrested in Tanzania for spreading false information on the viral disease.
James Manyama, acting Kilimanjaro regional commissioner police commander, said the arrested man, identified as Afrikana Mlay, spread false information social media indicating that Tanzania was hiding the actual number of COVID-19 infections.
"This false information was intended to create panic... and discourage efforts being undertaken by the government in fighting spread of the virus," Manyama said.
"Investigations on the matter have been completed and the suspect will be charged in court," he said.
