Liang Mengxiang (R) embroiders clothing of Miao ethnic group with her mother at Dangjiu Village in Gandong Township of Rongshui Miao Autonomous County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, April 15, 2020. Liang Mengxiang, 21, is a college student of Miao ethnic group born in Dangjiu Village, who studies at south China's Guangxi Science and Technology Normal University. Dangjiu is a remote, poverty-stricken village where women over 40 years old hardly ever attended any school, which was believed to be one of the major reasons causing local poverty due to language barriers. Over the years, with a range of favorable rural education policies implemented, all the children here have the opportunity to receive a better education which also benefited Liang Mengxiang, who has now studied at a college. Since February of this year, local authorities piloted a Mandarin training programme at Wuying Miao Village as part of efforts in local poverty alleviation, employing college students to teach stay-at-home women Mandarin. Liang Mengxiang, who stayed at the village due to the COVID-19 outbreak, applied to be a Mandarin "teacher" to train the women from the village. "I'm very happy that they can make a little progress each day. I hope more and more people like them can learn Mandarin." said Liang. (Xinhua/Huang Xiaobang)
