RONGSHUI, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Liang Mengxiang, a 21-year-old girl of Miao ethnic group born in Dangjiu Village, is a college student of south China's Guangxi Science and Technology Normal University.
Dangjiu is a remote, poverty-stricken village where women over 40 years old hardly ever attended any school. Language barrier used to be one of the major reasons causing local poverty.
Over the years, with a range of favorable rural education policies implemented, all the children here have the opportunity to receive a better education which benefited Liang Mengxiang.
Since February of this year, local authorities piloted a Mandarin training program at Wuying Miao Village as part of efforts in local poverty alleviation, employing college students to teach stay-at-home women Mandarin. Liang Mengxiang, who stayed at the village due to the COVID-19 outbreak, applied to be a Mandarin "teacher" to train the women from the village.
"I'm delighted that they can make progress each day. I hope more and more people like them can learn Mandarin," said Liang.
