ACCRA, April 20 (Xinhua)-- A Chinese state-owned enterprise on Monday donated 10,000 surgical face masks to Ghana's Ministry of Roads and Highways in its latest bid to help support the country's COVID-19 fight.
Kang Biao, head of China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd in Ghana, said the face masks imported from China were delivered to Ghana's railway authorities within two weeks after they learned the ministry faced a lack of protective equipment.
"A friend in need is a friend indeed. Many Chinese companies have reached out to donate face masks to Ghana's governmental institutions and local communities, " said Kang, adding that Chinese companies here have always been committed to fulfilling their responsibilities.
As of Monday morning, Ghana has recorded a total of 1,042 confirmed COVID-19 cases, making it one of the hardest-hit countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The Ghanaian government has on Monday lifted a three-week partial lockdown but kept its borders closed and public gatherings banned to curb the further spread of the virus.
According to Kang, the company that engages in construction could create thousands of job opportunities for locals annually, and the company has done its best to ensure all the local employees could be fully paid during their absence amid the lockdown.
"We regard ourselves as a member of the local community, and we firmly believe unity will help us win the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic," Kang added. Enditem
