DAMASCUS, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The Islamic State (IS) group cut off the road connecting the capital Damascus with the eastern province of Deir al-Zour at the town of Kabajeb in eastern Syria on Sunday, a war monitor reported.
The IS militants captured a vehicle in Kabajeb carrying a Syrian officer and a woman, executing them alongside two other people in the area, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The UK-based watchdog group said the Syrian forces brought reinforcement to the area amid battles with the IS militants.
This comes as new video footage appeared online showing IS members executing a number of people claiming they are "spies" for the Syrian army in the vicinity of the Sukhneh area in the remote eastern countryside of Homs province on the road to Deir al-Zour.
The IS group lost key areas in eastern and northern Syria but is still holding areas in the Syrian desert in eastern Syria. Enditem
