ISLAMABAD, May 22 (Xinhua) -- A passenger plane of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) with around 100 people aboard crashed Friday afternoon in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, local media reported.
According to media, the Airbus A320 plane which took off from the country's eastern city of Lahore crashed in Jinnah Garden area of Karachi.
Police, security forces and rescue teams reached the site and were extinguishing the fire.
The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) said the aircraft was carrying 107 people, including 99 passengers and eight crew members.
However, the PIA airline said 98 people were on board the ill-fated plane.
An eyewitness told the media that the plane crashed in a residential area. Local TV footage showed firefighters were putting out the fire in a residential area.
