BRUSSELS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in European countries.

LONDON -- Another 113 COVID-19 patients have died in Britain as of Saturday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 38,489, British Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Robert Jenrick said Sunday.

The figures include deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community.

As of Sunday morning, 274,762 people have tested positive in Britain, marking a daily increase of 1,936.

MADRID -- Two more COVID-19 patients had died in a 24-hour period until midnight on Saturday in Spain, bringing the country's toll to 27,127, according to fresh figures on Sunday.

Spain's health authorities also reported 96 new infections in the 24-hour period, compared with 271 new cases reported in the previous 24-hour span, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 239,429.

ROME -- Seventy-five more COVID-19 patients had died in the past 24 hours in Italy, bringing the country's toll to 33,415, out of total infection cases of 233,019, according to fresh figures on Sunday.

Nationwide, the number of active infections dropped by 1,616 to 42,075, according to the Civil Protection Department.

THE HAGUE -- The death toll from COVID-19 in the Netherlands rose by five to a total of 5,956 since Saturday, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) announced on Sunday.

The daily death count is the lowest since March 16, when four people were reported dead from COVID-19.

As of Sunday, the number of COVID-19 cases in the Netherlands stood at 46,442, up by 185 from a day earlier. The number of COVID-19 patients who are or were admitted to hospitals rose by eight to 11,735, according to the RIVM.

LISBON -- Portuguese Ministry of Health will focus efforts to control the COVID-19 pandemic in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, which has a large share of new cases.

Around 7,000 tests will be done per day, in addition to inspections in places of greatest vulnerability, according to the ministry.

Portugal recorded 297 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, of which 268 are from the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region. To date, the pandemic has infected 32,500 people and claimed 1,410 lives in the country.
