HOUSTON, June 5 (Xinhua) -- A voluntary evacuation was in effect in Grand Isle, a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, on Friday afternoon as Tropical Depression Cristobal is approaching the Gulf Coast.

Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle said a mandatory evacuation will begin at 6 a.m. Saturday morning as the region prepares for the tropical system forecast to reach tropical storm status Friday night, local media reported.

Weather forecast said Cristobal will move into the Gulf of Mexico and track north toward the Gulf Coast.

The National Weather Service said earlier that a 60 percent chance of above-normal 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is expected. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30 every year. Enditem
