MEXICO CITY, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's Cruz Azul has reported eight positive COVID-19 cases, casting doubt over whether the club will be ready for the Liga MX restart scheduled next month.
In a statement on Saturday, Cruz Azul did not disclose how many players had been infected but said all of the cases were asymptomatic.
It said the results came after the club conducted tests on players, coaches and staff on June 24.
Earlier, Cruz Azul said that 14 members of their women's team had also been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus.
The Liga MX Clausura season was canceled in May, two months after football was suspended in Mexico because of the health crisis.
Liga MX officials announced last week that the Apertura tournament would begin on July 24, with matches to be played without fans until further notice. Enditem
