CHONGQING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- A heavy rainstorm has left one person dead and another missing as of 10 a.m. Thursday in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, local authorities said.
Torrential rains disrupted the lives of more than 69,000 local residents. A total of 2,035 people have been evacuated, according to the municipal flood control and drought relief headquarters.
Rainstorms also damaged 1,251 hectares of crops, toppling houses and disrupting highway traffic in Chongqing. The direct economic loss amounted to 73.32 million yuan (around 10.37 million U.S. dollars).
The municipal hydrological monitoring authorities said heavy downpours battered parts of the city from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning, with the largest daily precipitation reaching 128 mm in Jingzhu Village. The rain has pushed water currents to exceed warning levels in some rivers. Enditem
