MUSCAT, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Oman on Tuesday reported 1,262 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total infections in the country to 48,997.
Omani Ministry of Health said in a statement that the new cases included 968 Omanis and 294 non-Omanis.
It confirmed six new fatalities from the coronavirus, raising the death toll to 224, and 1,854 more recoveries, bringing the total recovered cases to 31,000.
The Omani government decided on Tuesday to raise many of the fines against violators of the decisions by the supreme committee tasked with containing the COVID-19 pandemic.
The committee announced in an official statement after its meeting on Tuesday headed by Interior Minister Hamoud Al-Busaidi that it raised the fines because of the refusal by many to abide by the precautionary measures, which led to a significant rise in infections.
The new decisions included imposing a fine of 100 Omani riyals (260 U.S. dollars) for not wearing a face mask in workplaces, public transportation and public places, and the same fine for the institutions not providing an record on entry and departure time of their employees from the workplace.
It also decided to impose a fine of 500 Omani riyals on the institutions not providing security guards to record the entry and exit of their workers and visitors. Enditem
