DHAKA, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Heavy monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Tuesday with vehicles stranded on water-logged roads and people trapped at homes as many low-lying areas were inundated.

Roads, lanes and bylanes in parts of Dhaka went under ankle to knee-deep water, causing immense hardship to the commuters and millions of dwellers.

The country's meteorological office said the heavy rainfall started Monday as "monsoon became extremely active" over the North Bay of Bengal.

Aftab Uddin, a senior meteorologist of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), told Xinhua Tuesday they had recorded 87 mm rainfall in Dhaka in the last 24 hours till 6:00 a.m. local time Tuesday.

"We've recorded another 22.6 mm rainfall in Dhaka merely in the last 6 hours until 12:00 p.m. in the afternoon (Tuesday)."

Because of the serious water-logging problem, activities in the country's business district of Motijheel have been severely affected, with many office-goers, traders and workers falling behind their daily schedules.

As always rickshaws emerged as a means of relief in many water-logged Dhaka areas. The main city areas appeared less crowded as people also preferred to stay indoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB)'s Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) has said the rivers around Dhaka are rising which may likely continue in the next 72 hours.

According to the daily disaster situation report by the country's National Disaster Response Coordination Center (NDRCC) under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, floods in parts of Bangladesh have left 21 people dead, affected over 2.6 million people and displaced hundreds of thousands of families.
