JAKARTA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- A cargo ship caught fire on Tuesday afternoon in Java sea north of Jakarta while leaving from the capital city to Pontianak in West Kalimantan province, state news agency Antara reported on Wednesday.
The fire was believed to come from one of the vehicles onboard the cargo ship KM BAHARI INDONESIA at around 3.30 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
A search and rescue helicopter was sent to the location in a bid to rescue the people on board.
As many as 26 crew members had to abandon the ship using lifeboats and were rescued by nearby vessel KM SAMUDERA JAYA ABADI. All the 26 seamen were evacuated to Ketapang port in West Kalimantan and reported safe. Enditem
