NUR-SULTAN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan registered 1,740 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total to 80,226, including 610 deaths and 51,260 recoveries.

Almaty, the Atyrau Region and Nur-Sultan have been hit hardest as all three regions are recording around 10,000 patients.

According to Johns Hopkins University statistics, Kazakhstan, a country with a population of 18 million, ranked 27th worldwide in terms of the number of cases.

Specialists from clinical and diagnostic laboratories in Kazakhstan said half of Kazakhstanis who decided to self-test for COVID-19 over the past week had acquired immunity to coronavirus, TengriNews reported Saturday.

Kazakhstan has seen a spike in COVID-19 and pneumonia cases since June. Health Minister Aleksei Tsoi announced on July 17 that starting Aug. 1, pneumonia cases showing clinical signs of COVID-19 would be counted in the COVID-19 statistics, even without a coronavirus test for confirmation. Enditem
