SANAA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed on Tuesday morning when artillery shelling hit their homes in the south of Yemen's northwestern province of Hodeidah, local medics told Xinhua.

Ten others, including six children, were wounded by the artillery shelling on the residential area of al-Jah al-A'ala in the district of Bayt al-Faqih.

Several houses in the area were also damaged during the exchange of heavy shelling between the Yemeni government forces and the Houthi rebels, said the local residents.

Hodeidah has seen a shaky cease-fire between the Yemeni government and the Houthi rebels since both sides reached a UN-sponsored truce agreement in Stockholm in December 2018.

Part of the province, including the port city on the Red Sea, is under control of the Houthi rebels, while the government forces have advanced to the southern and eastern districts.

Yemen has been mired in civil war since late 2014, when the Iran-backed Houthi group seized control of much of the country's north and forced the Saudi-backed government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa. Enditem
