BAGHDAD, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A total of three people were killed and two kidnapped on Wednesday in the Iraqi provinces of Salahudin and Diyala, security sources said.

In Salahudin province, a roadside bomb went off near a civilian car in the north of the provincial capital Tirkit, some 170 km north of Baghdad, destroying the car and leaving two brothers dead and wounding their father, Mohammed al-Bazi from Salahudin's provincial police told Xinhua.

In Diyala province, Islamic State (IS) militants carried an attack on a Kurdish village near the town of Kanaqin, some 165 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, killing a villager and kidnapping two others, Eisa Abdul-Rahman from Diyala's provincial police told Xinhua.

The attackers also set fire to two vehicles before they fled the scene, Abdul-Rahman said, adding that the Iraqi security forces deployed around the village and conducted a search campaign looking for the attackers.

The extremist IS militants have intensified their attacks on the security forces and civilians in the formerly IS-controlled Sunni provinces, resulting in the killing and wounding of dozens.

The security situation in Iraq has been improving since Iraqi security forces fully defeated the IS militants across the country late in 2017.

However, IS remnants have since melted in urban areas or deserts and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians. Enditem
