NUR-SULTAN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Local authorities in Kazakhstan's Baikonur city, where the Baikonur cosmodrome is located, announced Tuesday an extention of the city's COVID-19 quarantine measures till Sept. 20.
According to a statement from the city's authorities, large-scale public and family gatherings are banned, while the use of dance floors has been prohibited. Entry of citizens invited by locals into the city has also been banned.
The statement added that the city's epidemiological situation has improved, with only six COVID-19 cases reported over the past three weeks and the number of patients in the city's hospitals dropping to three. However, the available indicators of coronavirus infection do not yet allow the current set of restrictions to be lifted.
The city, with a population of around 60,000, reported a total of 1,037 confirmed COVID-19 cases from June 1 to Sept. 7, including 67 deaths.
Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, the Baikonur spaceport has operated normally over the past several months. Enditem
