Roundup: COVID-19 death toll surpasses 33,400 in Africa

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 related death toll in Africa reached 33,403, the Africa CDC said on Friday.

The continental disease control and prevention agency said in a statement that the total number of people who contracted the disease in the continent reached 1,379,909.

The Africa CDC also disclosed the number of patients who recovered across the continent had reached 1,131,838.

The most affected African countries in terms of the number of positive cases include South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Ethiopia and Nigeria. South Africa had so far reported 655,572 cases and 15,772 deaths as of Friday, it was noted.

The continent's total COVID-19 cases represent about 4.7 percent of the global tally, according to the Africa CDC. The average continental fatality rate is currently around 2.4 percent.
