BERLIN, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen started their seasons with a goalless draw after sharing the spoils in the final game of the first round of the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Both sides started highly motivated as Leverkusen took over, whereas Wolfsburg focused on turnovers and fast breaks. However, both teams lacked in accuracy.

Wolfsburg came close with 32 minutes played when Maximilian Arnold's corner kick struck the crossbar before John Anthony Brooks headed just over the target from a promising position two minutes later.

The second half started similar to the first as Leverkusen were the more active team whereas the "Wolves" lurked for their chances.

Wolfsburg thought they had opened the scoring at the hour mark but Admir Mehmedi's goal was ruled offside. Meanwhile, Leverkusen tested Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels through Moussa Diaby, who unleashed a shot from nine meters in the 64th minute.

As the match progressed, Wolfsburg assumed control and Joao Victor should have marked the opener but instead of beating Leverkusen custodian Lukas Hradecky with a well-placed shot, he tried to round Hradecky, who was on guard to defuse the situation in the 74th minute.

Leverkusen had the last chance on target but substitute and new arrival Patrik Schick was unable to beat Casteels with a header with seven minutes to the final whistle.

"We have to agree with the goalless draw as the match was evenly balanced. We have some room for improvement, but I am sure that we are going to score many goals soon," Leverkusen goalkeeper Hradecky said. Enditem
