TOKYO, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Tokyo metropolitan government on Wednesday confirmed 59 new COVID-19 infections, marking the lowest daily figure since June 30 when 54 cases were reported.
Compared to 88 cases reported on Tuesday and 98 on Monday, the daily cases has remained below the 100-mark for the third consecutive day, the metropolitan government said.
Infections in Tokyo have marked a downward trajectory since mid-August after daily increases had hit numbers of 300 to 400, peaking at a record of 472 new infections on Aug. 1.
While Tokyo's cumulative total stands at 24,453, the highest among Japan's 47 prefectures, the metropolitan government has lowered its virus alert level from the highest on its four tier scale to the second-highest, meaning "vigilance against a resurgence of the virus is needed." Enditem
