TRIPOLI, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed government on Tuesday declared three days of mourning over the death of the late emir of Kuwait.

"The Presidential Council (of the government) announces three days of mourning in Libya and flies flags at half-mast for the death of the late Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah," the Foreign Ministry of the UN-backed government said.

UN-backed Libyan Prime Minister Fayes Serraj also offered condolences to Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti crown prince who has been named the new Kuwaiti emir, over the death of the late emir.

"With the death of His Highness Sheikh Sabah, we lost a wise leader who devoted his life to the service of his country, the Arab and Islamic nations. Throughout his life, he strived to unify and bring together the Arab positions," Serraj said.

To mourn the death of the late Kuwaiti emir, who passed away in the United States at the age of 91, the Kuwaiti government announced 40 days of national mourning, while deciding to close government and official institutions for three days starting on Tuesday. Enditem
