SOFIA, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Bulgarian Health Ministry on Friday reported a record high of 1,595 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the national tally to 34,930.
The previous daily record of 1,472 new cases was reported on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the country's COVID-19 death toll has reached 1,064 after 16 more patients died in the past 24 hours, the ministry said.
It also said that 1,792 patients are currently hospitalized, with 112 in intensive care, while the number of infected medical workers has reached 1,786.
The ministry added that 235 people have recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the country's total recoveries to 17,833.
Despite the upward trend in the spread of COVID-19 in Bulgaria, the authorities have so far refrained from introducing radical anti-epidemic measures.
Starting from Thursday, Bulgaria made wearing masks obligatory in all public spaces where people gather and where observing a physical distance of 1.5 meters is impossible.
From Friday onward, the occupancy in discos, bars and other nightclubs should hold no more than one person per two square meters, according to the authorities. Enditem
